The science behind HOCATT™, PEMF, recovery and healthy ageing

Biohacking sounds futuristic. But the idea behind it is actually pretty simple: what can you do today to help your body function, recover and age well tomorrow?
For some people, biohacking means tracking their sleep.
For others, it’s strength training, nutrition, breathwork, sauna, cold exposure or paying closer attention to recovery.
And then there’s the technology.
PEMF. Far infrared. HOCATT™. Heat therapy. Recovery technology.

What Is Biohacking?
Biohacking is a broad term used to describe lifestyle practices, measurements and technologies intended to influence how the body performs or feels.
Some of the most effective “biohacks” aren't particularly high-tech at all.

Technology doesn't replace those foundations.

What Is HOCATT™?

That sounds like a lot.
So rather than getting lost in the technology, let's look at some of the underlying ideas individually.
Heat: One of the Most Interesting Areas in Longevity Research
Sauna and heat exposure have attracted significant interest in wellness and longevity circles.
When you're exposed to heat, your body has to regulate its temperature. Heart rate and circulation change as the body works to dissipate heat.
This is one reason sauna research has become so interesting.
However, there's an important distinction.
Research into traditional sauna use, far-infrared sauna and HOCATT™ itself isn't interchangeable. A review of far-infrared sauna research found some preliminary evidence in areas including cardiovascular health and chronic pain, but also highlighted small studies and limitations in the evidence.
So when we talk about HOCATT™ and longevity, we prefer to say:
HOCATT™ can form part of a broader recovery and wellness routine.
Not:
“HOCATT™ will make you live longer.”
Those are very different claims.
And we think that distinction matters.
What Is PEMF?

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy.
Instead of producing heat, PEMF devices generate changing electromagnetic fields.
Researchers have investigated PEMF across a number of areas, particularly musculoskeletal conditions, pain and rehabilitation.
This is where things get interesting — but also where good biohacking information needs to stay grounded.
A systematic review examining PEMF for nonspecific low-back pain found that five of nine randomised controlled trials reported significant improvements in pain and physical function compared with their controls. However, treatment frequencies, intensities and protocols differed substantially between studies.
Another meta-analysis found benefits for pain in chronic low-back pain but did not find a significant advantage for physical function overall.
More recent research also illustrates why sweeping PEMF claims should be avoided: a 2026 review of neuropathic pain found the evidence highly inconsistent and dependent on the type of pain being studied.
In other words:
PEMF is an interesting technology with genuine scientific research behind particular applications — but it isn't a magic electromagnetic cure-all.
We think that's a much more useful way to understand it.
What Does PEMF Have to Do With Longevity?
This is where we need to redefine longevity.
Longevity isn't simply:
“How do I live to 100?”
A more useful question might be:
“How do I want to feel while I'm getting older?”
Can you move comfortably?
Can you remain active?
Can you recover from exercise?
Can you keep doing the things you enjoy?
Do you make time for rest and recovery rather than waiting until your body forces you to stop?
That broader idea is often called healthspan — focusing not only on years of life, but on maintaining health and function through those years.
PEMF hasn't been established as a treatment that extends human lifespan.
Its relevance to the longevity conversation is more appropriately considered through areas researchers are studying, such as pain and physical recovery, rather than claiming that the technology itself makes people live longer.
